Cadastral Map

A cadastral map shows the boundaries and ownership of land parcels.Cadastral surveys were originally used to ensure reliable facts for land valuation, but more importantly, for taxation. When the frontier of the American west was being pushed to the Pacific Ocean, all the land in between was mapped and cadastral maps were made so that land could be sold and taxed. The cadastral map above shows the divisions of the parcels of land, the size of the parcels (in hectares), and the parcel numbers. The red circle shows a cadastral plan. Cadastral mapping is thought to date back to the ancienct Egyptians who needed a way to keep track of property when the Nile's flooding destroyed all of the property markers.
