Cartograms use a thematic mapping variable in place of land area or
distance. This causes warping of the cartogram, causing the strange
image presented above. This cartogram is a representation of the Gridded
Population of the World (GPW) database. It is a distribution of the
world's population based on a grid function. It includes population data
from 1990 to 2012; it also presents hypothetical data up to 2015.
