LIDAR Remote Sensing

This is a map of Dry Tortugas National Park, which is the westernmost island in the Florida keys. This topographic map uses LIDAR (light detection and ranging) remote sensing. The LIDAR data were processed to DEM images at 1m x 1m spatial resolution. The LIDAR system used is called experimental advanced airborne research lidar (EAARL), which provides unique capabilities to survey coral reefs, nearshore benthic habitats, coastal vegetation, and sandy beaches. EAARL uses a very low-power, eye-safe laser pulse to gather the remote sensing data used here. This map is valuable to the National Park System in their reef conservation efforts as well as to sailors navigating through the area.
